CULTURE

The contributions that African Americans have made to the fashion community have gone somewhat unnoticed. Not on purpose but something surely can explain this lack of knowledge can't it ?

The Early Days

The history of blacks involved in American fashion goes all the way back  to slavery. Elizabeth Keckley was the true definition of a pioneer.Being born into slavery did not stop Keckley, after mastering her craft of dress making she was able to take a loan of $1,200 from her wealthy clients and purchase her freedom. She was then able to move to Washington D.C and start her own dress making business.Keckley quickly gained clientele and not just any kind of clientele,Marry Todd Lincoln the First Lady of the United States.

Innovation

Zelda Wynn may not be a household name, but I guarantee you know of her work.Wynn opened her boutique  on broadway(the first African American to do so) she helped designed dresses for the stars of her time. With so much accomplished already this was not yet where she made he stamp on pop culture. Hugh Hefner caught wind of her designs he requested that she do some work for him . That work would go on to become the iconic play boy bunny costume.

IMG_0519.JPG

It's not how you start but how you finish

Jay Jaxson was not your typical fashion designer by any means. He wasn't even supposed to be in the industry, he was first introduced by his seamstress girlfriend.Jaxson trained under designers such as Christian Dior & Yves Saint Laurent. At the young age of 24 he was asked to lead the charge for failing couturier Jean-Louis Scherrer. Although the line would eventually fail Jaxson broke barriers not only for African Americans but Americans as a whole. The first American couturier in Paris.Jaxson would go on to sell in high end  retailers. Before his death he was able to work as a costume designer in movies and television shows.

Appreciation

Appreciation for the culture as a whole is important. But we cannot forget those whose works have gone unappreciated. These are only a few names that were ahead of their  time but there are many more. Let's appreciate them all.

The  Occasion

Your job might not require it, but wearing a tie in the work place a few times out of the week never hurts.(unless you're wearing the wrong shirt size 😂)

Stay Warm, Look Great : 5 Tips On Staying Warm In The Winter

As the piercing winter approaches many men do not know how to look warm - yet fashionable at the same time! Let's be real you throw on that huge, black, wool coat and nobody ever sees your outfit! Men can confuse "dressing warmly" as just throwing on as many clothes as possible. Not only does this hide your outfit - but you don't look as fashionable as you could. Here are some tips to help you stay warm and look great this winter season!

1. Layer The Right Way

Examples of layering

Examples of layering

Most people already have an idea of how to layer up for the winter. Although, many people think layering means throwing on a bunch of shirts, sweaters, cardigans on top of each other with no meaning. Throwing on a lot of mixed matched sweaters does not make you look good. A way to layer most effectively is layer different types of thin shirts, or sweaters followed by a jacket that will keep you not only warm but stylist around town. Stop hiding everything under a huge jacket! Layer with a statement.

2. Fashionable Accessories

image.jpg

Whether it's a hat, gloves, or scarf these essential are the key to your winter outfit. All of these items will keep you warm, dry, and stylish this cold winter! Pick items that will not only go with your outfit but your jacket most importantly!

3. Boot Up For The Winter

image.jpg

Most men usually wear the same dress shoe year round. Upgrading to a boot isn't so bad. Not only are boots fashionable - they keep you warm! Boots cover your ankles and keeps the air from your feet. Find a nice leather boot and you'll want to be outside forever .. Literally.

image.jpg

4. Invisable Thermals

Hidden thermals are also a key way to stay warm in the winter. Men who love wearing suits know that undershirts are a necessity. Invest in thin, slim thermals that will keep you warm but won't break your outfit.  Face the winter head on and prepared!

5. Wear A Coat

Layering; sweater followed by coat

Find a winter coat that looks great and keeps you warm. Going into 2016 try to stay away from black. Earthy tones will give a pop to your look. Just because the temperature is dropping your style doesn't have to! Step up, and face the winter fashion first.

Check The Footwear

Shoes are definitely an attention grabber in the fashion world. Footwear brings an outfit together and can leave a lasting impression on other people about yourself. Your shoes should reflect the type of outfit you are wearing. If you are wearing a casual outfit you should wear a casual sneaker like an all star Converse or Nike air max shoe

Likewise a suit and tie looks better with dress shoes. Dress shoes with laces or the kind that come in the loafer variety have become more stylish then ever. You can also buy different color shoe laces to replace the ones that come standard with ordinary dress shoes in order to add your own flare to your footwear. A rule of thumb for dress shoes is to make sure they match the color and finish of your belt.

Shoes are very much a staple of any mans closet. Maintaining great looking shoes helps increase the longevity of your shoes and keeps them looking fresh every time you wear them. For casual shoes, a simple tooth brush with soap and water can go a long way. For leather dress shoes, make sure to shine them every once in a while. Also placing shoe trees in leather shoes keeps the leather from wrinkling. Suede dress shoes can be kept nice and clean with Suede shoe protectant. This can be found at your local Walmart or shoe store.

Spring Essentials

Although most people are still experiencing the cold of winter, spring is right around the corner. Pastel colors are definitely going to be in this season. Button up shirts in bright colors are going to be a staple when its time to have fun in the sun. Here are are some other essentials that you may need to complete your beach party look.

1. Shorts (Duh)

Khaki or navy blue shorts are the most common when pairing with pastel colors but don't limit yourself. Use those dressing rooms and try on different color combinations that fit your style.

2.Boat Shoes

No need to wear bulky sneakers when you hit the beach this spring break. A simple boat shoe that is easy to slip on is a great way to stay stylish in hot weather.

3. Shades

Nothing better to top off your spring look than a great pair on shades. Shades come in many different shapes, sizes and colors so its up to you to pick out a great pair to coordinate with your look.

4. Sunscreen

Many people will agree that nothing ruins your spring hangout session than a nasty sunburn. Pick up some sunscreen at your local pharmacy or supermarket. SPF 15 is most recommended.

Shopping 101

Shopping for new clothes can be an exciting experience as well as a difficult one. Knowing how to be a smart shopper will save you time, money, and disappointment. Here are 3 main tips that we at BlaccBox will increase your shopping IQ.

1. Know What You're Shopping For

Buying clothes  without a plan can lead to unnecessary spending and can be time consuming. Take a look at the clothing in your closet and drawers then make a list of items you would like to add to your wardrobe. This will ensure that you don't spend money on clothes you already have and will be more focused on what you need to buy.

2. Create A Budget

Depending on what specific item of clothing you are looking for and the store you choose to shop at, clothes can be very expensive. Having a reasonable budget is the key to not making any regrettable decisions while shopping for clothes. Also try to find coupons and take advantage of sales. One of the most underrated sections of any clothing store is the "Clearance" section. You will be surprised what great items you can find for very low prices there. You'll look great and your wallet will thank you.

3. Fitting Rooms Are Your Friend

Most of us know what our sizes are when it comes to shirts, pants, etc. but what some people don't know is that some brands fit differently than others. This is especially true when it comes to jeans/pants. Remember that its not just about looking good but feeling good as well. so make sure that the clothes you try on are comfortable to you. Nothing is worse than having to make another trip to the store to exchange or return clothes that don't fit.

Remember to check out our clothing subscription packages starting as low as $28 a month. Each subscription is custom made for you based on your style profile. We provide name brand clothing and accessories so hurry and sign up.  Looking dapper has never been such a steal!

New Year, New Styles

2014 was a great year in men's fashion. There were some great trends that popped on the scene including jogger pants and unbelievable sock patterns. Not to mention all of those printed shirts and sweaters that quickly went from the clothes rack to our closets. We expect 2015 to bring in even more fads to the fashion world. Although every upcoming trend may not suit you, we at BlaccBox encourage all of you to try out all sorts of new styles and looks this year. Of course everyone has their own personal style and not everything looks good on everybody but there is no harm in trying out new things. Try out some bow ties or maybe wear a bold color shirt to work. Get some feedback on your outfits and adjust your looks from that information given to you. We wish you all a great and successful new year!

Cardigans: The Swiss Army Knife of Your Closet

Cardigan sweaters are a bit underrated in the fashion world. What most people don't realize is that cardigans are one of the most versatile pieces of clothing there is and is a must have in your wardrobe. Cardigans can be found in different colors, styles and fabrics. The versatility of this particular garment can range anywhere from a casual trip to the coffee shop to a professional setting of the big board meeting in your office. On the casual end, you can wear the sweater over a crew neck or v neck tee shirt. You can wear the cardigan over a button up shirt with a tie for more of a professional look. And if that's not enough class for you, then add a blazer over the cardigan. You can't get anymore elegant than that! All in all, if you don't own a cardigan sweater do your closet a favor and get one soon!

Winter Essentials

Scarves

Scarves come in all sorts of colors, fabrics and lengths. They are a great way to add style to your winter wardrobe while also keeping yourself warm

Gloves

Gloves are definitely a necessity in the cold winter months. They keep your hands good and warm on those harsh snow days. Some gloves are even touchscreen compatible so that you can use your mobile device without having to take the gloves off.

Over Coats

Unless you live in Florida or California, you are going to need a coat. Not a sweater, not a jacket, a coat! Coats are typically made with heavier materials and also provide insulation on the inside to keep you warm. But don't think you can't be stylish with a coat. Add a coat over a nice sweater or blazer to perfect your winter layered look.

Moisturizing Products

With winter comes cold weather and you know what that means...dry skin and chapped lips. Make sure to carry around travel sized containers of lotion and petroleum jelly (Vaseline). Most people use chapstick to moisturize their lips but the truth is that chapstick only provides temporary relief of of dried, chapped lips. Vaseline is a much better solution and will keep your lips looking healthy and soft.

Put some "stank" on it

What's the use in looking wonderful if you smell like a damp sock? Everyone loves someone who smells good. The key is not going overboard. If the smell of you precedes your entrance or lingers long after your exit, you're losing. Here's a few colognes that will leave a great olfactory impression without bringing anyone to tears.

OMG! What do you have on?

Some things never go out of style. Unfortunately, a lot of the fashion found in your local retailers are kinda faddish and it can be hard to identify the two. Now, don't get me wrong, I love a gaudy, bold colored blazer and an exposed patterned sock as much as the next person but it's extremely important to be able to differentiate between the clothing you NEED and the pieces you won't be able to wear next week.

Here's some examples of timeless menswear you ought to make a habit of having:

It's been a minute.

DId you miss us?

We know you did ;)

Ok, so anyway.. A Feminine Touch (the official Blaccbox blog) took  a little hiatus but we're back and we have news!!!

But don't fret! Very soon we'll be opening the site to new subscriptions. Until then feel free to comment below or contact us for information  on subscribing and even sooner we'll be setting up a waitlist in which all potential subscribers will be queued according to when they signed up.

Blaccbox vs. Trunkclub

Everybody's asking and I'm here to answer. First off I'd like to state that this analysis of both parties is COMPLETEL.Y UNBIASED. Secondly...Blaccbox is better in every conceivable way.

OOOHHHHHH SHOTS FIRED!!!!

Alright, let's get started:

Awesome and amazing. Forward thinking and affordable. You love it...we just know you do

Awesome and amazing. Forward thinking and affordable. You love it...we just know you do

Ok so Trunkclub, no offense but you don't get a little cute chart. 1. Because you're the competition 2. It took way longer than it should have for me to make that thing in Microsoft paint.

So here's how Trunkclub works: They send you clothing to try on. That's it. You have 10 days to return the things you don't want and you're charged for everything you keep. It's a glorified dressing room.  Also, the purchase price for everything you keep is pretty expensive.

Again, not to toot our own horns but.....Blaccbox is clearly  the better deal. So what are you waiting on? Go sign up

If you have and further questions, feel free to ask below in the comment section :)

Keep it casual

I've noticed, in my experience, that while most men have a grasp on cleaning up nicely, far too few know dress it down. Here's some examples of men keeping it casual using pieces you probably already have in your closet. Take notice.

Everybody's doing it....

It's often expected for the "gentler sex" to be most dominant in terms of fashion trends and it's no secret that the silhouettes of men's clothing rarely changes, but what a wonderful thing it is to see the two sides sort of mesh and become one. The blurred line between women's and men's wear has become increasingly fuzzy, and it's awesome.

What was once considered unprofessional and perhaps "feminine" in terms of men's clothing for the ultra conservative American businessman has burst onto the runways and trickled down onto to the masses in the most delightful of ways. Sporting bright colors, contrasting patterns, and highly accessorized lapels has replaced the poorly fitted, mono toned, business suits of early 2000s. Thank goodness

Let's not forget the wonderful influence that menswear has had on women. Tailored jackets and skinny ties are absolutely divine whether paired with a lovely pencil skirt of a pair of nicely fitted leather pants. And don't even get me started on how fabulous girls look in wingtips. Long gone are the days of having to be delicate and maintain an ultra feminine facade.  It's no longer "unlady-like" to exude the confident swagger of a well dressed man and anyone who thinks it is, is probably still living in 1962. Women are playing with the "big boys" now.

Longstoryshort.... the sexes are intermingling and we, here at Blaccbox, absolutely love it.
